Student recognition and celebration
Recognising and celebrating success
At Dixons City Academy, we place a strong emphasis on celebrating student achievement. Recognition is woven into daily life:
- Appreciation points: awarded for exceptional effort, conduct, and engagement.
- Certificates and prizes: in celebration assemblies at the midpoint and end of each cycle.
- Postcards home: sent by subject teachers to highlight academic progress or outstanding contributions.
Celebrating culture with our Iftar events
Each year, we host a community Iftar, which has become one of the most valued traditions in our school calendar. The event is held during the holy month of Ramadan and provides a special opportunity for students, families, staff, and members of the wider community to come together in a spirit of unity, gratitude, and celebration.
The evening begins with a warm welcome and a short reflection led by staff and students, highlighting the values of Ramadan; empathy, self-discipline, generosity, and togetherness. These values align closely with our own values of respect, integrity, and determination, and with our vision of being the best version of ourselves to change our world for the better.
When Iftar arrives, the fast is traditionally broken with dates and water before everyone gathers to share a meal. We provide food and decorations, resulting in a vibrant spread that reflects the rich cultural diversity of our community. The shared experience of eating together creates an atmosphere of joy, respect, and belonging.
For many, our community Iftar is not just about the meal but about the sense of connection and learning. It provides an opportunity for people of all faiths and none to experience the spirit of Ramadan, to develop understanding of different traditions, and to celebrate the diversity that makes our community so special. A space is also provided for those wishing to pray, ensuring the evening respects and supports the practices of our Muslim students and families.
The Iftar has become a powerful symbol of what it means to be part of Dixons City Academy. It strengthens relationships between families and staff, allows students to feel proud of their heritage and identity, and reminds us all of the importance of unity and mutual respect.
Our annual Community Iftar is a true celebration of togetherness, diversity, and belonging, values that lie at the heart of everything we do at Dixons City Academy.
