Dixons schools partake in two day music project

Posted 23rd February 2026

Just before the holidays, Dixons City Academy had the pleasure of hosting the EQUALIZE Project, a national initiative designed to reimagine music education and better reflect the creative identities of young people.

About the Project

EQUALIZE is a collaborative programme led by Young Sounds UK and the Black Music Research Unit (University of Westminster), working in partnership with Punch Birmingham and Bradford Music and Arts Service. The project brings together professional musicians, educators, and researchers to explore how music in schools can be shaped by the real interests and experiences of students.

A Trust-Wide Opportunity

To support the project’s research and ensure a broad range of student voices were represented, we opened the opportunity to our neighbouring academies. Students from Dixons Trinity and Dixons Kings Academy joined us across the two days, creating a rich mix of skills, perspectives, and musical backgrounds.

Creative Workshops and Hands-On Music Making

The project ran over two full days—one for KS3 and one for KS4. Students took part in a series of practical workshops, including:

  • Music production using Ableton Live
  • Lyric writing and composition sessions

Throughout both days, students worked collaboratively, experimented with new ideas, and developed their musical confidence in a supportive and inspiring environment.

A Great Experience for Everyone Involved

The programme was extremely well received, with students highly engaged in all activities. We are proud to have hosted the EQUALIZE Project and look forward to supporting similar opportunities in the future that broaden and enrich the musical experiences of our students.
