Ben Karlin

Assistant Principal, Teaching and Learning

Ben began his teaching career in Sheffield through the Teach First programme. After teaching English for two years, he decided to explore other options and spent three years in strategy management in the business and charity sectors. This confirmed that his real passion was for working in schools and he returned to the classroom in Bradford in 2015, joining DCA in 2016.

Starting in the English department, Ben became Progress Leader for English and oversaw the redevelopment of the year 9 and 10 English curriculum as well as supporting the leadership of the department to deliver outstanding English results. Ben is committed to developing excellent teachers and has been a mentor to trainee and new teachers as well as joining the Teaching Leaders programme in 2018. From September 2019, Ben has been working as an Assistant Principal and helping to develop whole school CPD for staff, empowering more people to be outstanding in their daily practice.

Another key part of Ben’s role is to lead our Robust Reading and Instructional Reading programmes so that all students develop into confident, fluent readers with a love of books. As an avid reader with a passion for literature, he feels privileged to work with talented and committed staff to achieve this. Ben also leads on quality assurance of Teaching and Learning, believing that all teachers should be lifelong learners. To this end, he is also still learning, working towards his NPQSL beginning in September 2019.
