Catering
Here at Dixons City Academy we are committed to providing a healthy and balanced diet from our canteen. In this connection we follow the guidelines set out by the Government’s School Food Trust which allows the following.
Soft Drinks containing: 100% water (still/carbonated), milk (skimmed/semi), 100% fruit juice, 100% vegetable juice, plain i.e. unsweetened/unflavoured soya, rice or oat drink. Confectionary, sweets, chocolate and crisps are not allowed. Salt is not available after the cooking process is complete and fried food is allowed only once a week, with processed meat restricted to once every fortnight.
Healthy options are available e.g. fresh fruit and vegetables. Bread and red meat is available at least 3 times week. We provide dairy food on a daily basis e.g. low fat yoghurts, flora spread, cheese and custard. Salad lunch boxes are also available consisting of pasta pots with chicken, tuna or prawns. Baked beans have reduced amounts of salt and sugar. Vegetarian, halal and non-halal are available each day.
The canteen operates a 4 week menu cycle with Meal 1 offering a meat choice and Meal 2 offering a vegetarian option. We also offer home made pizza with 4 vegetarian choices, paninis with 3 vegetarian choices, assorted wraps and sandwiches with 6 vegetarian choices including a fish option. The final part of the programme requires us to prove that our menus are healthy and balanced and in this respect we are working towards allocating nutritional values to all our food.
Meal Deal Our daily “Meal Deal” enables students to purchase a full meal consisting of a main course and pudding for the fantastic price of £2.00!
Theme Days Theme Days are held approximately once a month. These are very popular with students who provide lots of positive feedback to staff.
In safe hands In November 2008 we were extremely proud to be awarded the highest mark of 5 stars from the Department of the Environment. Every member of our catering staff holds the Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene.
All students have a 40 minute lunch break. Students are allowed to bring packed lunches which must be eaten in the amphitheatre.
Orderly access to the canteen is supervised by members of Academy staff.
PLEASE NOTE: The canteen operates a cashless system.
